A shade garden trimming the foundation of a home. Client wanted a green setting in which to plant her favorite annual flowers.

A new spring perspective

A Shade Garden Under a Tree

Nothing would grow in the shady dry earth unbder the tree until we took on this project. An irrigation system was also essential to make it happen.

Red and purple flower garden

Client asked for a perennial garden containing her favorite colors of red, purple, white and yellow. Red hydrangeas in the background and red blooming Sedum will display their colors later in the season.

Walkway garden

Purple irises contrast dramatically against lemon yellow peonies. These upscale peonies are extremely difficult to locate but well worth the search because when in bloom they create an emotional high and leave the  visitor either speechless or shouting with joy. No one is left untouched  by this plant. Over several weeks, the yellow peonies will stop blooming, the purple iris will fade but all of the roses will remain in bloom until the first snowfall in early winter.

The dramatic beauty of this project is rooted in the spontaneity of the design. The red rose was chosen only for its height and its color but appeared spindly and lonely when in bloom. By adding a lush white perennial to grow in the background, we turned a gawky teenager into a gracious adult. This composition, done several years ago, is an example of the longevity of the flowering plants in my repertoire

Pink is the favorite color in the flowerbed

Almost every client asks me for pink perennials. The look of joy on their faces when they see them bloom is personally rewarding and accounts for the main reason I choose to do this kind of work. Most shades of pink blend in nicely with flowers in tones of blues, purples, white, lemon yellows as well as with foliage in all shades of green and silvery blue.

Brown Fence Garden

Popular priced fencing sold in big box stores  leaves most garden with an antiseptic look after it has been installed. Here, I chose sun loving drought resistant plants to take one's eyes off the fence. When planting against a dark brown fence, the color palette of the perennials should be considered. In this case, aesthetic decisions are personal. Most would agree that yellows, peaches and oranges are effective. However, this client insisted upon deep hot pink. We integrated that color by surrounding it with yellow. 

Front Garden

A strategic placement of plants and colors always produces eye catching flower compositions.  The light pink roses in the background have been blooming in this garden for close to twenty years. The size of the bush and the amount of flowers it pumps out is  related to the amount of sun, the frequency of irrigation and the amount of feeding  it receives. This variety of rose flowers spectacular;y even when neglected. The shorter dark pink roses in the foreground is a newer plant that only began to pump out roses after taller perennials nerby that were blocking  the sun were removed.

Private Park Garden

A private park that is one city block long and  half a city block wide, is situated in the back of an L-shaped 13 story apartment building and cannot be seen from the street, that's how private it is. The client asked me to design a series of flower beds planted with spectacularly blooming plants that would look their best when his tenants peered out their windows or sat on their balconies. My camera skills are not good enough to capture the profoundly emotional experience of the tenants when they appreciate their view of these dramatic plants. This flower garden looks best when seen from the penthouse pool deck on the 13th floor. That is why this photo is rather unimpressive. I posted it here so that I could tell you that tenants walk into the management office of the apartment building every day  during the summer to thank the owner for the beautiful garden. 

Summer Flowerbed

This project was completed over ten years ago and demonstrates how mature plants create a lush color - saturated flower garden that re bloom every season. Since this photo was taken, we returned to the clients garden, dug up and divide each plant into three plants, replanted one in its original location and planted the other two in the newly-created gardens of the client's two adult children.

Yellow and Gold Perennials

Intensely colored yellow  plants have the power to stop traffic and create conversions among strangers. That is the magic surrounding well designed perennial flower beds.

A most successful rose bush in my landscaping

Although this rose variety is no longer offered by the plant industry, I post it here to share my pleasure in one of the most successful rose bushes I have ever come across. It makes everyone's heart beat just a little faster when it's coral color intensifies in cooler weather.

Early summer flowering

Multi-color plant compositions offer unexpected surprises. This photo was created by randomly planting the clients favorite flowering perennials. I no longer use the red  flower because it cannot sustain Montreal winters.

Late Summer captured view

Spectacular late summer flowering plants are rare. Here is one that seems to make everyone happy. It grows very tall, blooms in a rich purple color and thrives in hot dry conditions. Even after the flower-heads are spent, the plant remain majestic.

Everyone loves roses - especially when the're easy-care

Plant scientist have bred roses that eliminate the need for winter protection or the necessity for unhealthy chemical applications against insects and disease. What is lost is the traditional fragrance and long stems. The good news is that these flowering plants will bloom all summer long, from June until the first snowfall.

Tall, soft and billowy

There are plants in our repertoire to satisfy most home owners dreams. Here is one that appears as a pink-mauve cloud that seems to float over the flowerbed. It is one of the few perennials we use that is high maintenance because  the stem of the plant is too flexible to keep the flower-head upright. The client installed a metal post in the flowerbed to tutor the stem and create this majestic posture.

Blue flowering perennials

Blue is second  only to pink as one of the most popular colors in a garden. It makes us feel good to admire  and acts as a dramatic contrast to other colors. 

Mid-summer blossoms

Sometimes a plant composition occurs without deliberate  planning. Client had a sunny space in her flowerbed and expressed a strong desire for pink flowers. The colors range from pastel pink to pink fuchsia. Even the soft pink Penstemon plant has a tinge of burgundy pink in its foliage. Growing behind this composition is a later flowering perennial that will bloom in soft peachy pink.
